Rosy Rockfish – Sebastes rosaceus. Rosy rockfish is also known as rock cod, Pacific snapper, red snapper, and Pacific ocean perch.
Identifying Characteristics
- These fish have orange-red to purple-yellow bellies, with purple with red and orange on their backs.
- There have 4 to 5 white colored blotches on their backs, each bordered with red-purple.
- Fins are pink-yellow.
- Maximum length is 15 inch, maturing at around 6 inches.
Range and Habitat
- Rosy rockfish are bottom dwelling fish typically found between 180 and 350 feet deep.
- They are solitary fish.
- They range from Washington state to Baja California.
Market Forms
- Typically they are good eating, and commonly caught, but they tend to be on the small side so the fillets will be quite small.
- This is a species that when you run across to have a descender to get them back down to depths for release.
