The Multiplying or Multiplier Reel
The multiplier reel has dual revolution action in the spin handle and the spool. The spin handle goes in one revolution while the spool will make multiple revolutions, expressed in the gear ratios 3:1, 5:1, 7:1, etc.
A 3:1 is a low revolution, meaning the spool revolves 3 times to the handles 1 time. This is a low speed reel. A 7:1 is 7 revolutions of the spool to one revolution of the handle. This would be considered a high speed or high line retrieval reel.
The higher the speed, typically the lower the torque. So, a high speed reel would be great at pulling in a lure quickly, but would not be as effective pulling in a big fish from the bottom.
