Identifying Characteristics
- Cylindrical, elongated bodies.
- Backs range in color: blue/green, olive-green, tan.
- White/silver bellies.
- 1 to 3 series of dark spots down the middle of the backs.
Range and Habitat
- Southern Africa to the Eastern Pacific.
Market Forms
- Commercially fished for fish meal, also for consumption canned, frozen, and fresh.
- When caught fresh, best prepared grilled or fried – whole.
